The Artist

Detailed pen and ink scetches and illustrations available to purchase online from Oniell Ink UK

There was never any question, as far as I was concerned, about what I wanted to be when I grew up. ‘An Artist’. Sadly though, my parents did not consider Art School in the late 1960’s a suitable place for me to go, and since in those days you did as your parents told you to do I reluctantly went off to secretarial college instead.

However, I was not happy within the confines of an office, and when my two lovely daughters came along and I became a full time Mum, I was finally able to return to my first love - art.

One Christmas I was given a scraperboard set and was immediately captivated by the discipline of the nib and the incredible detail which could be captured with each tiny stroke. This naturally lead me towards Pen and Ink which has now become my preferred medium. Having always been an animal lover, cats in particular, my first serious subject was a tiger and her cub, and tigers have remained a firm favourite ever since.

I had never considered selling my work until a ‘lean’ period came along, as they do from time to time, and one rainy afternoon I found myself nervously trudging up a long steep hill towards a local art gallery, portfolio clutched in my sweaty hand, and tentatively offered a drawing for sale. My delight when my tiger and cub drawing was put in pride of place in the window, and sold within a couple of days knew no bounds and I finally was able to turn my childhood dream into reality.

I began work in earnest – except of course, that it isn’t work at all. It is sheer pleasure!

Since that time I have spent countless hours at the drawing board and have sold pictures of wild animals and buildings on a regular basis. I have received many commissions over the years, for drawings of both buildings and animals. Sometimes these are left black and white, and sometimes I add colour, either with a watercolour wash, or digitally.
